Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr., easily won the box office this weekend. The sequel made over $40 million in its opening weekend. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked finished second and made $23.5 million. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol made $13 million despite opening in just 425 theaters. Gas prices are lower than this summer, but consumers are paying record high prices for this time of year. The AAA is projecting record gas prices for the holidays. Gucci Partners With Bianchi for Two Luxury Bicycles

The Wall Street Journal reports that Gucci has launched a high-end city bicycle. The bike, designed by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini for Bianchi, retails for $6,200. A matte black carbon-fiber model of the bike costs $14,000. There is also a sleek looking helmet to go with the bikes. The Wall Street Journal says the bikes will be sold at select Gucci stores and at a new Bianchi concept store in Stockholm.

Tragedy in Afghanistan: 31 Americans, Including 22 U.S. Navy SEALS, Dead as Helicopter Shot Down by Insurgents

There was some very sad news out of Afghanistan today. A military helicopter carrying 31 Americans was shot down, killing all aboard. Among those dead were 22 U.S. Navy SEALs from SEAL Team 6. These were not the men who went on the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, but were from the same team. They were on a rescue mission at the time.
The team was going into the mountains of Afghanistan
to rescue troops that were pinned down by insurgents in a fire fight.
It's a real blow for the Special
Operations troops,
which are being deployed
heavily in Afghanistan
and who have suffered
many losses. The Taliban is claiming it brought down the CH-47 Chinook with a rocket-propelled grenade; the military is still investigating the cause of the crash.

The stars came out for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association charity luncheon this past week. Leonardo DiCaprio, Taylor Lautner, Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, Gerard Butler and Lea Michele all walked the red carpet for the event.
Leonardo DiCaprio introduced Mark Wahlberg, who joked that their careers were over because Taylor Lautner is "better looking than you and in better shape than me....Titanic and Boogie Nights were a long time ago." The HFPA handed out grants to film-related organizations and charities this year totaling $1,500,000. Leo accepted a check for $350,000 on behalf of the Film Foundation, which was founded by Martin Scorsese for the preservation and restoration of classic films. If you watch to the end of the tape, you'll see Lea Michele making sure she got a photo of herself with Taylor. There was no way he was getting away from her. In all fairness, he didn't seem to mind one bit.

US Postal Service Previews 2012 Santa Stamps

The Postal Service is offering relief from the summer heat wave with this sneak peek at its 2012 Holiday Celebration Santa and Sleigh Forever stamps. The stamps portray Santa Claus flying through the air in his sleigh. He has lots of presents for all the good boys and girls.
Artist Paul Rogers of Pasadena, CA, worked with art director Howard Paine of Delaplane, VA to create the stamps. The stamps were computer-generated but were originally sketched in pencil.

The cast of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto and James Franco, were guests on The View. Freida reveals how she was scared she would never work again after Slum Dog Millionaire. James talked about his tweeting addiction and how he had to give it up.
Andy is a very interesting interview subject. Andy plays Caeser the chimp using motion capture technology. He was also the voice and actor behind Gollum in Lord of the Rings. Andy describes the process for translating his acting onto the screen, and even reveals how he created the voice of Gollum. He based the voice on the noise his cat makes just before he hacks up a hairball, which is just hilarious. Andy will reprise his role as Gollum in The Hobbit, which is filming now in New Zealand.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is overperforming at the box office this weekend by quite a bit, so it looks like a hit. Take a look:

Winning AIA Barbie Dream House Announced

The winner of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Barbie Dream House Design Competition has been announced. The design submitted by Ting Li, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP and Maja Paklar, Assoc. AIA, received the most public votes and won the competition.
The eco-friendly house contains green energy saving features, including "solar panels, operable shading devices, low flow bathroom fixtures, energy saving light fixtures, and efficient HVAC equipment."
The 4881 sq ft home is situated on a bluff overlooking the Paciffic Ocean. It has four floors connected by a center core of spiral stairs. Barbie has a computer controlled closet filled with designer labels. Other features include a greenhouse, 500 sq ft terrace, landscaped garden and chef's open kitchen. Barbie rides around a pink Vespa scooter so she has no need a parking garage.
The winning designers said in a joint statement, "We are very honored to have been chosen by AIA and Mattel as a finalist and as the public favorite - Barbie was both of ours' favorite doll growing up in China and Croatia. We appreciate the versatility of our profession which allows us to express ourselves in a myriad of ways - from entirely built city environments to a Barbie Dream House. We hope to encourage more young female architects to flex their design muscles and just to have fun with architecture."
